A Seamless Metamorphosis

From Smalltalk to Jelly: fully leveraging AI for next-level social experiences. Refer to Pt.1 - Smalltalk case study for additional context.

As we moved forward, Smalltalk, which started as an innovative phone call platform, evolved in response to valuable user insights. It transformed into Jelly to better adapt, designing more around AI-driven features for enhanced social engagement, shareability, and interactivity.

Jelly isn't a pivot but an evolved iteration of Smalltalk. Just before launch, we integrated AI into the platform, and follow-up usability tests (20 moderated sessions) emphasized the value of focusing our design efforts on these new AI-driven features while empowering users to create and share content. Through strategic planning and creative sketches, Jelly took shape.

Jelly is a touch of magic.

A surprise.

A spark.

A moment that lingers.

It begins with real-time call transcriptions as interactive captions that can be liked and shared. Seconds after a call ends, users receive an editable title, summary, transcript, and audio, seamlessly capturing the essence of their discussion. A custom AI-generated image enhances the experience as users navigate to a public feed, where they can revisit and expand on their conversations (if public) or discover new ones.

We raised $2M from high-profile investors, but Apple's similar release in June 2024 prompted us to pivot. Like many companies before us, we embraced this crucible moment, quickly adapting. Although Iqram ultimately decided to pause operations at the end of last year, our journey wasn't in vain. We reimagined phone calls as a truly user-centric, dynamic tool for human connection, and what an exhilarating ride it was.
